Metal Gear is Real

Everyone who knows me knows I've been affectionate about the series since Metal Gear Solid in 1998. Anyone who knows the Metal Gear universe will be aware that some pretty crazy stuff happens (dead soldier becomes cyborg ninja, dead soldier lives on through severed limb, crazy soldier is stabbed and shot in the head regularly but remains A-OK, you get the idea), so I was pretty shocked when I came across this story.

To sum this story up, a couple in Florida froze some of their dogs' DNA while he was still alive. With an expense of £108,000 given to BioArts International (seriously, how Doom 3-esque does that sound?) they have been able to create a clone of their deceased dog. As amazing as it is, Lancelot (the dog) died of cancer, yet if Lancelot Encore (the clone) is a perfect clone, isn't he going to die of cancer, too?

FOX..... Die?

Well, it raises the whole question of nature vs nurture (very MGS!), does it not? Just because the dog is genetically the same doesn't mean it's the same dog. Will they treat it differently to the first, knowing it's a copy of their beloved original?

And then, of course, there's mutation that occurs during the lifespan... why did dog one have cancer? Diet? Genes? Something else?

Nice find, Emily!

Oh dear, Kojima might be relevant in the real world! I think I'm going to go lie in a corner and calmly say to myself "Metal Gear Solid Can Never Be Real" a thousand times...

I'd say this is categorised under "interesting but...". There's a definite reason I can't quite put my finger on that causes this story to go out the window ;)

In any case, I am somewhat glad you're more obsessed tying it to videogames and Metal Gear Solid then you are tying it to something applicable to real life (for obvious reasons). From a single conversion I remember I realise you love MGS, and can't give it up no matter what tries to persuade you, hah!

Umm... So they made a Clone from their dead Dog! Great! Why didn't they just get the animal stuffed (not to be harsh) and then they don't need to go through all the heart ache of the pooch getting Cancer again, they can have it imortalised.

On the other hand they could have just handed it over to the Umbrella company!

I can't Andrew, when I hear people complaining about cut-scene length or disliking the game in general a little part of me dies inside!

Haha, I can kind of see why, Consolevania's Rab loved it, but I think it's a slightly inaccessible game unless you play all the previous ones (which are inaccessible themselves).

No mentions of cutscenes here ;)

Also, +5 geek points for umbrella dog zombie resurrection reference to Fireclown.
